United Kingdom Broadens Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Nations

Methanol warning sign

British authorities has placed eleven new destinations to its travel warning register regarding the threats of methanol poisoning from adulterated spirits.

The updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just recently, authorities had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following multiple notable incidents like the deadly death of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that as little as minimal doses of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not designed for drinking.

While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.

Government Recommendations for Travellers

Foreign Office official the minister emphasized that every traveler should know the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits overseas, opt for well-known venues and refrain from local brews or complimentary drinks," the official warned.

"In case something feels off, for example a headache that's way worse than typical or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."

The complete list of destinations listed as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
